Rom, a young half-blood Tzanatzi outcast living in a land divided by its violent history, lives life unaware of his true nature and unnerving gifts.
When his smoldering temper lands him in trouble and he is forced to travel north with an Einache stranger, a middle-aged dreamwalker and shaman healer called Yldich, he finds he must accept his heritage if he wants to stop the past from repeating itself and destroying both their people.
As the men, whose ancestors were once greatest enemies, make their way through the dangers of Gardeth Forest, Yldich begins to teach Rom the spiritual values of the ancient Einache. Baffled by Yldich’s uncanny connection with nature, his humor and compassion, the distrustful young man slowly begins to accept himself and his heritage.
When they reach the North, Rom is reluctantly accepted by the rugged Einache clans and falls in love with Yldich’s spirited daughter Maetis.
But when his dreams tell him the true story of his people, and the Tahiéra, the ancient horror that was once evoked by the Tzanatzi rises again, Rom finds its roots disturbingly entwined with his own. He must face his own dark side if he wants to save both Tzanatzi and Einache from impending destruction, a journey that will take him to the Underworld..
